Biomass Pellets-Wood Pellets --Alternative Heat Source

Pellets are a biomass product made from renewable substances. Most often recycled wood waste is used for pellets, consequently, wood pellets are the most common. Pellets are a great heat energy source for alternative heating methods.

Wood pellets, wood chips, waste paper and many agricultural protects and by-products are capable of producing energy. Biomass products are renewable. The consistency and burn efficiency of pellet fuel produce less particulate emission as compared to the burning of raw biomass. With proper sustainable forest initiatives and agricultural management, biomass is virtually limitless and has proven to be price stable in comparison with fossil fuels.

Much of North American forest is second growth requiring management in order to address forest health and fire issues. The management techniques leave unusable material on the forest floor. Other source material for pellets are sawmills, woodworking shops and farms. This material that is unusable by high end wood manufacturers is perfect for commercial pellet manufacturers to harvest and use.

Pellet manufacturer convert millions of tons of otherwise waste products such as cornstalks, straw and the residue forest waste into pellets; we can use as a heating energy source. The otherwise waste products are refined into small pellets the diameter of a small pencil that are uniform in shape, size, density, moisture and energy content.

Advantages of Burning Pellets

  1. The moisture content of pellets is lower than raw biomass materials. Pellet moisture content is 4 to 8 percent. Raw biomass moisture content is 20 to 60 percent. Less moisture content means a greater Btu value and easier handling in freezing temperatures.
  2. The density of the pellet at approximately 40 pounds per cubic foot is higher than raw biomass at 10 to 25 pounds per cubic foot. More fuel can be transported in a given truck space and more energy can be stored at your site space.
  3. Pellet handling is easy. The uniform shape and size makes it possible for a smaller and simpler feeding system which can reduce costs. The high density uniform shaped pellets can be stored in standard silos, transports in rail cars and delivered to you site by truck containers.
  4. Biomass combustion is considered carbon dioxide neutral and therefore is not considered a major producer of greenhouse gas. Burning of biomass fuels merely releases the carbon dioxide that plants absorbed over their life span. In contrast, the combustion of fossil fuels releases large quantities of long stored carbon dioxide which contributes to the greenhouse effects.
