P&M Wood Outdoor Water Furnaces
The extra-ordinary quality and superb craftsmanship of this outdoor water furnace is supported by the fact that there are many 10 to 20 year old Portage & Main Outdoor Water Furnaces functioning without problems. Portage & Main Outdoor Water Furnaces are the original efficient green one!
The highly efficient multi-pass heat exchanger maximizes heat extraction from the flue gasses. The water filled and cooled baffle permits the first and second passes of flue gasses which, then, travel swirling and twirling through a water surrounded, heat exchanger of over nine feet, with a 180 degree reversing return before exiting the stack. The furnace has a high efficiency rating. It burns 1/3 to 1/2 (or even less) wood to provide more heat. The Portage & Main Outdoor Water Furnace delivers maximum btu outputs from minimum wood inputs.
All parts are laser cut which permits precision fitting and the bevel to be welded with strong total penetration double welds (boiler style).
The round fire pot and multi pass heat exchanger is made of W44 cold rolled 1/4" mild steel. W44 1/4" cold rolled mild steel is uniform, durable and welder friendly. Journeyman Welders will attested to the significance and importance of this.
Round firepot eliminates side wall warping. Round has less expansion/contraction therefore less weld stress. Round is self circulating; therefore no cold or hot spots. Round gives the fire better flame contact with the metal. Round is stronger to last longer, just as the steam engines were round for a reason
The durable galvanized ash pan and the water cooled grates allow the Portage and Main outdoor wood burner to bring combustion air in under the grates. Portage & Main Outdoor Water Furnaces also introduce air above the fire. Over and under air combustion gives a complete burn of gases-quick recovery and reduced smoke emissions. Also because of the water cooled ash grates and the ash pan, the bottom 1/3 of our stove is not full of ash, we are able to radiate heat into the bottom 1/3 of the fire pot which is the cold area and best potential for heat transfer. Portage & Main furnace/boilers ash pan allows you to clean the ash pan safely while the furnace is operating.
"Johnson Controls" — (digital water temperature controls) automatically adjust the damper. Aqua stat is programmable to within one degree (no upward creeping temperature). Portage & Main Outdoor Water Furnaces also have a high limit safety aqua stat.
The one piece roof of the Portage & Main Outdoor Water Furnace is powder-coated finish for long life. The roof has no trims to rust and deteriorate. It will look good for years. All components of the Portage & Main Outdoor Water Furnace are painted with excellent enduring products.
Convenient loading height door has safety cam lock latch to prevent blowbacks. Pyramid style door is insulated with Roxul insulation (insulation value of 2200 degrees). Door is sealed with top quality industrial rope gasket.
All surfaces are insulated or water cool for safe operation. Furnace is insulated with R20 fiberglass insulation that will not sweat, crack or gas off. The well insulated and waterproof unit has a 2 inch insulated base.
The easy to access rear connection and controls are protected by a large, hinged, lockable door. There is plenty of room for multiple hook ups.
Water levels are indicated by a convenient float. There is no sight glass or tubes to fog or discolor.
The handy transport and install hook makes installation placement easier.
Standard Models come with cleaning tool, certified chemical water treatment and standard stainless steel chimney.
Portage & Main Outdoor Water Furnaces (wood burners) are available in four sizes — ML 30, ML 36, ML 42, and ML 54. They are CSA US approved. Non Insulated models are also available.

P&M has a unique 4 pass water cooled heat exchanger
with a horizontal pass of 10 feet of travel incorporating
a 180 degree turn to keep heat in the exchanger longer
for a maximum heat exchange – easily cleanable from
both ends. 1/4" thick welder friendly corrosion resistant
cold rolled steel.
Round firepot provides the best circulation
of water and least number of welds. Even expansion/
contraction means less weld fatigue, the strongest design
and elimination of warping problems. Steam engine
boilers were built round for a reason.
Convenient float (easy to see water level – no sight glass to discolor),
breather tube, and filler pipe’s unique design reduces evaporation.
Water returns through grates for maximum heat transfer
taking advantage of the tremendous amount of heat in the
coal bed, further increasing this furnace’s efficiency.
Shaker grate models shown with over under fire air
controllable induction. Burns soft or hard coal. Shaker
grates not water cooled.
Digital controls programmable to within one degree.
Rear access connections – Encloses: digital temperature
controller and pipe hook-ups – easily accessible and
protected by hinged, lockable doors.
Easy to remove, non-corgugated, galvanized ash pan means you
don’t put out fire or work in messy ashes, to keep the bottom of the burn
chamber clean and dry thus preventing bottom corrosion.
This also results in more heat transfer area ready to pick up
heat from coal bed.
Multiple access doors makes for easy operation and maintenance.
Top quality solid rope gaskets in the doors of the heat
exchanger, the ash pan and the cleaning access doors keep
unit airtight.
Powder coated finish on the roof has no trims to rust or
deteriorate. No chimney through the roof prevents roof leaking
problems. Roof will still look good in 25 years.
Top quality mirror-like paint on the rest of the furnace.

Portage & Main Workmanship
Portage & Main Outdoor Water Furnaces have a long history of great performance. Round fire pots and 1/4" cold-rolled steel means less risk of warping related problems. The welding strength is increased by the boiler style double welds. W44 cold rolled steel has the same corrosion resistant properties as boiler plate. It is know for being a very "uniform" steel, ideally suited to forming without fatiguing. Corrosion is easily controllable with top quality certified boiler water treatment.
